In July 2023, I ended my fourth year with a bag full of lessons and experiences. It was evident that I have changed in all these years. The one naive person who started university in 2019 has changed a lot after spending four years there. Time changes, and nothing stops for a moment. The same goes for your growth and thoughts. After completing four years, I see heaps of lessons. Therefore, I have decided to compile all of them together. Here are the four lessons that I have learned in my university,

Goals are the only hope

Sometimes, it becomes difficult to live. The only driving force that helps you stay alive and struggle is goals. After entering university, a fresh-man should start making goals. These should be centred around the future image of the fresh-man. While deciding all that, a fresh-man should think about what he/she want to be after four years. The first thing that pops up in his/her mind is the goal. It is better to note it down. If a fresh-man, after four years, wants to become financially independent, then it is his/her goal. Later, the fresh-man will decide on the plans and system to accomplish it, but for now, he/she have finalised the goal. It is not a shame to have more goals. The fresh-man can note down as many as he/she wants. Once your targets have been finalised, start making smaller goals. It is the same as Descartes’ breaking down each difficulty into smaller parts. Therefore, it becomes solvable. For instance, your goal is to become financially independent, now divide it into four smaller parts, starting a way to earn, focusing on it, expanding it, and then earning from it. Now assign each part to your each year. For example, in first-year, you will find a way to gain money. The best that suits your personality and skills. In the second year, you will focus on it and not abandon it. You can modify it, but you won’t abandon it. And so and so. In this way, you will achieve your goal/goals after four years.

The system is what you need the most.

In the words of James Clear, who says that everyone has the same goal, but only one succeeds. It is because one has a solid system. Once you have shortlisted your goals, the next step is to devise a system to achieve it. How will you manage your time? What would be the initial steps? The motivation? It all comes in this part of devising a system. It is not for goals, but anything in your life, you need a system. Therefore, one should always have a system in one’s life.

Discipline is destiny!

In the system part, there is another important element. It is discipline. It is the last and the rate-limiting step in your journey. Everything with discipline will end in a better place. In the long run, it helps you to maintain a balance in your life. Balance is very necessary. Especially when you have reached the peak of your university life. You are doing well in academics and so decided to get engaged in societal events. To support yourself you have started to earn. Now, the greatest task is to maintain a balance between your academic life, social life, and financial life. It can not occur without discipline and a strong system. The fourth year of my degree was crucial in terms of these matters. I wasted more time deciding and devising a system than doing all other activities. But, later, I understood that the problem was not in the system, but in my routine and the long run, in my discipline. The system was the best. But I was not following it. I was slacking off. It was all due to my inability to maintain discipline. So, compiling goals, devising a system, and maintaining discipline are the three most important steps in bringing success. Of these three, maintaining discipline is the most important and rate-limiting step.

No abandoning

The most important lesson of my university life. Do not abandon yourself, your goals, and your inspirations. One should stick to what he wants. It is the common nature of man to abandon things when he finds that they are not working or he sees no profit in them. At a certain moment of my life, when I found myself engaged in multiple tasks but could not get results. It was the reason behind it. I did every new adventure for 1 or 2 months and then abandoned it. Then it was followed by sessions of regret and grief. If you want something, the most important thing is to stick to it. One should stay committed to one’s goals and must not abandon them. Therefore, a fresh-man should stick to his goal until the world ends or he gets what he wants.

In your university life, you meet several people and moments. In all these, one should prioritise himself. Never place a society’s event or a person’s presence above your existence. You are important. Therefore, one should prioritise himself, his goals, and mental health above everything. These are the important lessons I learned in my four years of university life.
